Hi! My name is Talia and I’m eight years old. So my older brother was on a robotics team at Young Makers Lab but I wasn’t interested in that or other “STEM” classes…I thought. My schedule is busy with ballet, music lessons, girl scouts and school and friends.
What is a Robotics Team?
There are several organizations that organize Robotics Teams - including Lego, VEXIQ, First Robotics Competition and Wonder League Robotics. Each organization is targeted to an age specific audience.
Why are schools killing creativity?
In education the past decade (and probably longer) has been spent preparing kids for testing, and telling kids there is one correct answer. This is not my opinion, it is my experience as a classroom teacher in Palm Beach County since 1991.
While I spent more than 25 years in the classroom - gosh that sounds like a lifetime - there was a life before teaching that is worth reflecting on. I didn't become a teacher until I was 31 years old.
In the Spring of 1994 I was teaching first grade at a West Palm Beach elementary school. My oldest daughter, Alyssa, was in kindergarten at a school in Boynton Beach, where her mother taught. The kindergarten teacher sent home a flier from a nearby Boynton Beach elementary announcing a "Math, Science & Technology Magnet" program that would begin in the fall.
The schools will tell you that they need more time to prepare for the “test,” but we understand that the "test" is a one day snapshot of what kids were able to do on that particular day and in that particular setting.
